Having been familiar with Hackney for the past four years or so, the new owners of the Old Ship Inn thought the borough would be a good area to try a new concept they had been thinking about, and the Old Ship, on Sylvester Path, right next door to Hackney Empire and the local council offices, was the ideal place for them to do this.

The Old Ship is a traditional British inn and the new owners aim was to take the pub, a British institution, back to its roots - a place to eat, drink, socialise, and sleep, without it costing the earth or being dressed up as something it’s not.

A big part of this is the menu in the restaurant. It’s unashamedly British and they’ve nabbed one of the best chefs in the industry, whose talent and passion for British food is contagious. The man behind the menu, Scott Wade, has worked in Michelin starred kitchens around the UK and his experience includes leading Docklands gastropub, The Gun, to its award-winning status.

But The Old Ship is far from a gastropub. Their devotion to seasonal, British produce and local farmers means that the food is far more interesting and unique than the usual offering, and this philosophy also means they can keep prices down too.

Put simply, it’s fantastic British food at affordable prices and definitely something that they believe the workers and residents in Hackney will embrace whole heartedly.

Another interesting element to The Old Ship is the 10 modern hotel rooms above the pub. There are 6 single rooms at £79.95 per night, and 4 doubles at £99.95 per night. They’re contemporary, comfortable, well located and really well priced - ideal for Hackney businesses which need to put someone up overnight without breaking the bank, or equally suited to visiting friends or family who want more than to bunk down on a futon on the floor!

The owners have said, “The hotel rooms were one of the things that caught the imagination of Invest in Hackney, who were 100% positive at every step, helping us through the planning process and through our paces when we were planning the ‘new-feel’ Old Ship.
