The owners of vintage clothes and homewares shop, Paper Dress, have made the most of Hackney’s quirky reputation.
Based at 114-116 Curtain Road, Paper Dress sells hand picked vintage clothing, accessories, home ware and furniture from the 1930’s -1980’s. Their inspiration takes in a host of retro references from Biba to Bowie whilst dramatic lighting and a gallery exhibition feel to the clothing display aim to create an altogether new shopping experience.
A stylish interior, an on-site alteration service for that bespoke fit and stock, hand sourced throughout the UK, add to the business’s unique selling points whilst prices range from the indecently-affordable to the reassuringly-expensive.
Paper Dress is well suited to its artistic, diverse location in Hackney, providing a variety of styles from a variety of eras to a variety of customers, all with creativity as their common factor. It has embraced the multicultural buzz of the area and indulges the need for excitement through hosting a string of events which have in the past included a rockabilly band and an acoustic country singer playing on the window stage, fashion shows, dress up days and general parties for no reason in particular. It also aims to encourage local performance and artists by offering a space for exhibitions and installations.
Paper Dress hopes to build on Hackney’s reputation for innovation and stretch it towards its Shoreditch triangle location. “There was much contention about where to base the shop,” says Hannah Turner Voakes, the shop’s proprietor, “but Hackney has so far exceeded all expectations - the choice of locating here was a good one!”
The team behind Paper Dress include general entrepreneur and socialite Justin Mallet, vintage loving Norwegian Miriam Hoyden and the Arts school educated Hannah.
Opening hours for the shop are: 11-7.30pm Mon-Sat, 12.30-6.30pm Sundays.
