Creative
The creative industries are generally defined as those “which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property”.
These industries include among others, advertising, architecture, the arts and antique market, crafts, design, designer fashion, film and video, interactive leisure software, music, performing arts, publishing, software and computer services, radio and television.
The creative digital media and IT sector has grown so strongly in and around Shoreditch that the area around Old Street has been dubbed the “Silicon Roundabout” and in an ambitious project, Wired Magazine are currently working on identifing and mapping all of the relevant businesses in the area.
Arguably one of the most significant opportunities for Creative Industries within the borough comes from the development of the International Broadcast Centre/Main Press Centre for the London 2012 Games within the borough, at Hackney Wick.
This development at the Wick will create almost 1 million sq ft of high specification, flexible office and studio space. The new buildings will feature state-of-the-art utilities, power and digital connectivity. And they will be adaptable to a wide range of uses post 2012, so maximising the potential employment opportunities after the Games.
In Legacy the vision for the site is the development there of new-media/creative/digital industries hub. Hackney Wick is already home to a great many fine artists – SPACE studios and Cell Project Space both have successful studio complexes out there. ACME Studios are currently working with the developers of the Lesney/Matchbox site to create affordable workspace units in a pioneering development.
