Manufacturing

Manufacturing is, and has always been, an important part of Hackney’s economy. This is part of the lasting legacy of the concentration of manufacturing industries in and around Hackney that developed during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Manufacturing activity in Hackney ranges from the production of wholesale food, printing services and furniture construction to the hi-tech manufacture of information technology and intellectual property based products.

Hackney has a wealth of potential development sites for manufacturing processes, from small warehouses suitable for printing and smaller scale operations to larger sites suited to large scale manufacturing development. As manufacturing processes change buildings are being redeveloped to provide contemporary commercial environments and mixed use developments.

Hackney Wick continues to be the base of manufacturing in the Borough but there are pockets of manufacturing clusters spread across the borough providing space for most activities.
